What to Expect from your Clinic Appointment:

I SCHEDULED AN APPOINTMENT: NOW WHAT?

A case manager from Cleveland Sight Center will be in touch via phone prior to your scheduled visit to prepare you for your appointment and answer any questions you may have.

WHAT SHOULD I BRING?

In preparation for your appointment, it is important to come prepared to talk about the activities you are currently struggling with due to your vision. It is also encouraged to bring samples with you of items that you would like to see better. For example, if you are having difficulty reading your newspaper, medication or crocheting, please bring them with you so we can find the right tools to help you.

WHAT WILL WE DO DURING THE APPOINTMENT?

This appointment is different than your traditional eye exam. Our specialized staff of optometrists, occupational therapists and opticians will help you better understand your vision diagnosis in this assessment while focusing on your needs and goals. During your assessment our doctors will take time to understand what you are struggling with due to your vision. They will then recommend a variety of training, low vision aids and assistive technology that will help you overcome obstacles and reach your goals.

For example:

  • You will not be given drops to dilate your pupils and it will not be necessary to shine bright lights into your eyes during the visit.
  • We will read your eye doctor’s examination notes to familiarize ourselves with your vision diagnosis.
  • We will complete a refraction if necessary.
  • We will talk to you to ascertain what your specific challenges and goals are.
  • We will show and teach you how to use various strategies and tools, such as magnifiers, telescopes that can be attached to your glasses and technology modifications to help you meet your goals and improve your quality of life.
  • We will demonstrate specific lighting and various filters (sunglasses) to maximize contrast and minimize glare as needed.

HOW LONG WILL THE APPOINTMENT BE?

2-3 hours.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE APPOINTMENT?

After your appointment, your case manager will work with you on the next steps of your care. You may be referred for additional Cleveland Sight Center services within our vision rehabilitation, employment, recreation or support services departments as needed or desired.
