Cleveland Sight Center Recognized for Advocacy Efforts

Cleveland Sight Center (CSC) was recently recognized by CARF for demonstrating exemplary conformance to its accreditation standards, the result of CSC’s advocacy efforts to achieve Medicaid coverage of the white cane. The Medicaid rule 5160-10-30 includes coverage for ambulation aids under durable medical equipment, which previously covered canes, crutches or walkers but excluded coverage of white canes, and made Ohio the first state in the country to provide coverage.

A means to travel safely and independently, the white cane is used to mark paths, signal the user to an obstacle, and improve the confidence of individuals with visual disabilities. CARF recognizes this achievement as a model for other states in the nation that only recognize the white cane as a way to identify someone is blind.

Cleveland Sight Center earned CARF’s accreditation for the next three years after a rigorous review process, ensuring its programs are measurable, accountable, and of the highest quality. The three-year accreditation is the 14th consecutive for Cleveland Sight Center, dating back to 1982, and also includes services in the areas of:

  • Community Employment Services: Employment Supports
  • Community Employment Services: Job Development
  • Comprehensive Vocational Evaluation Services
  • Vision Rehabilitation Services: Comprehensive Vision Rehabilitation Services

CARF is an independent, nonprofit accrediting body whose mission is to promote the quality, value, and optimal outcomes of services through a consultative accreditation process and continuous improvement services that center on enhancing the lives of the persons served.

White Canes at CSC

Cleveland Sight Center offers a great selection of white canes and tips. Our newest model, “the Clevelander” is covered by insurance for those who are Medicaid eligible.

When using the white cane for the first time, we highly recommend you receive Orientation and Mobility training from a Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist.  In addition to helping you learn how to use a white cane properly, this one-on-one training can help build confidence, safety and ability to travel independently in familiar or unfamiliar areas. Our staff can also educate you on the different types of canes, tips and sizes that are available.

For more information on purchasing a white cane, click here or call CSC’s Eyedea Shop at 216-791-8118.
