ABOUT CLEVELAND SIGHT CENTER

Cleveland Sight Center is a multi-faceted nonprofit agency founded in 1906 serving people of all ages who are blind or visually impaired. We provide preventative, educational, rehabilitative, and many other vision support services directly to approximately 10,000 clients in the greater Cleveland area each year. Through community outreach and our radio-reading service, that number increases significantly. We are accredited by CARF, the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities.

In addition to our educational and rehabilitative programs, we have a Low Vision Clinic, offer a wide array of social and recreational activities, and have a residential camp, Highbrook Lodge, in Chardon. Our comprehensive services are available to residents of Cuyahoga, Lake, and Geauga counties, with onsite services available to anyone who can travel to Cleveland Sight Center’s University Circle location.

Cleveland Sight Center values an individual’s right to lead as full and meaningful a life as he or she desires, regardless of impairment level. Our programs are designed to encourage clients to remove boundaries and achieve their goals. More than 100 specially trained staff members, including social workers, optometrists, certified vision rehabilitation therapists, orientation and mobility instructors, occupational therapists, educators, nurses, and other professionals work to help individuals with vision loss learn, work, play and live more safely and independently. Our dedicated volunteers make a significant difference in our achievements every day.

Guiding Principles

Who do we serve?

Anyone who is having trouble with daily activities as a result of vision loss, is seeking greater independence and is willing and able to benefit from one or more of our services. We also provide education and support to family members.

What do we do?

Enable people who are blind or visually impaired to reach their full potential at home, school, work and in the community through programs and services that:

  • Evaluate by assessing client needs and exploring client preferences
  • Habilitate and rehabilitate by setting and achieving goals and outcomes, acquiring skills, and increasing independence at home, school or work
  • Employ by teaching skills for finding meaningful work and maintaining and developing a career
  • Socialize by providing access to community recreation, challenging one’s abilities, interacting socially, and gaining peer support
  • Support independence by providing and maintaining access to community resources
  • Eliminate obstacles through community education and advocacy

All programs are evaluated by outcome measures designed to accomplish these goals with the highest professional standards and greatest client satisfaction.

When?

You will receive a phone call from a Cleveland Sight Center staff member within one week of registering with us.

Where?

Primarily Cuyahoga and its adjoining counties. Where other service organizations exist, we do not duplicate their efforts. Persons from outside this area who can reach Cleveland Sight Center will be served.

How?

People with vision loss always come first, followed by family, teachers, employers - whoever can help our clients achieve their goals.

Why?

The Greater Cleveland community has entrusted Cleveland Sight Center to realize the potential of all people with vision loss to be independent, to make choices to improve their quality of life, and to accept the rights, responsibilities and opportunities of community participation.
